Directed By Women

It is no secret that Hollywood has a diversity problem and nowhere is that more apparent than in the disheartening and unacceptable gap between men and women in directing roles. A recent study showed that of the Top 250 grossing films of 2016, only 7% of them were directed by women. And even worse, if you look back at classic cinema the disparity becomes even greater.

For the longest time I as a consumer was part of the problem, simply because I paid no attention to who was directing what, and my own statistical analysis of my films lin 2016 showed that of the close to 2000 films I had watched at the time, only 3% of them were by women. So I’ve tried to course correct since then (and it’s a long haul – as of mid-2017 I’ve managed to increase that percentage up to 6%). And as an accountability piece to myself I’ve decided to keep specific track in my collection of the films directed by women that I own. Cursorily, it’s a useful list for those of you out there who want to add some female-directed films to your own watch-lists. So here they are:
